When 24-year-old Alexis Gabe disappeared from Oakley, California, in January 2022, her family and friends immediately began searching for answers.
What followed was a months-long investigation involving multiple law enforcement agencies, volunteers, surveillance evidence, phone records, and searches across Northern California. The case eventually led investigators to Alexis’s former boyfriend, Marshall Curtis Jones, who was killed by police in Washington state while authorities were attempting to arrest him.
Months later, a discovery in Amador County finally confirmed what Alexis’s family had feared.
Alexis Gabe Disappears
Alexis Gabe was last seen on January 26, 2022, after visiting the Antioch home of her former boyfriend, Marshall Jones. According to authorities, she had gone there to retrieve belongings.
She never returned home.
Her disappearance quickly became a major concern for her family and the local community. Friends, relatives, volunteers, and law enforcement participated in searches as investigators attempted to reconstruct her final known movements.
Her abandoned vehicle was eventually found in Oakley, adding another important piece to the investigation.
As the days passed without an explanation, attention increasingly focused on Jones.
Investigators Build a Timeline
One of the most important parts of a missing-person investigation is establishing a person’s final confirmed movements.
Investigators can use surveillance footage, cellphone information, vehicle records, witness accounts, and other evidence to reconstruct a timeline. In Alexis Gabe’s case, police later said that surveillance video, cellphone data, DNA evidence, and other investigative material helped them build their case against Jones.
Surveillance footage can be particularly useful because it provides an independent record of movements. A single recording may show only a vehicle or a person for a few seconds, but when multiple sources of information are combined, investigators can sometimes establish a much clearer sequence of events.
In a disappearance investigation, even seemingly ordinary details can become significant.
Focus Turns to Marshall Jones
Authorities eventually identified Jones as the primary suspect.
Contra Costa prosecutors charged him with murder in May 2022, according to reporting at the time. Investigators believed Alexis had been killed after visiting Jones’s home and that her remains had subsequently been moved to other locations.
However, because Jones died before facing trial, the allegations against him were never tested in a courtroom.
That distinction is important.
Investigators may reach conclusions based on evidence collected during an investigation, but a criminal conviction requires a judicial process. In Alexis’s case, that process never took place because the principal suspect was killed before trial.
The Attempted Arrest in Washington
After leaving California, Jones was eventually located in Washington state.
In June 2022, officers attempted to arrest him in connection with Alexis’s disappearance. Authorities said Jones charged at officers with a knife, and he was fatally shot.
His death brought the possibility of a criminal trial to an end.
For Alexis’s family, however, the case was far from over.
They still needed to know what had happened to Alexis and, most importantly, where she was.
The Search Continues
Investigators and volunteers continued searching areas of interest in Amador County.
At one point, bones discovered near Pioneer raised hopes that Alexis’s remains had finally been located. A forensic anthropologist later determined that the bones were not human.
The false alarm demonstrated how difficult the search had become.
Investigators had to examine remote locations while also evaluating information from witnesses, search volunteers, digital evidence, and other sources.
The family continued asking for help finding Alexis and bringing her home.
A Discovery in Plymouth
On November 3, 2022, a resident in the Plymouth area of Amador County contacted authorities after discovering what appeared to be human remains.
Sheriff’s deputies responded, and investigators from the Amador County Sheriff’s Office, Oakley Police Department, and Antioch Police Department became involved in the examination of the area.
The following day, a forensic odontologist examined the remains using Alexis’s dental records.
The remains were positively identified as those of Alexis Gabe.
The discovery brought heartbreaking confirmation to her family after more than nine months of uncertainty.
The Investigation Did Not End There
Authorities said only partial remains had been recovered.
Investigators believed that other remains could have been located elsewhere, and additional searches were conducted. Officials acknowledged that a complete recovery might never be possible.
The discovery therefore answered one of the family’s most painful questions—what had happened to Alexis—but it did not erase every uncertainty surrounding the case.
Investigators still had to document evidence and establish as much of the timeline as possible.
Why Surveillance Evidence Matters
The original headline surrounding the story focuses heavily on CCTV footage, but surveillance video is only one part of a complex investigation.
Detectives can compare footage with cellphone records, vehicle movements, witness statements, forensic evidence, and other information.
The goal is to determine what can be established as fact and what remains uncertain.
This process is especially important when a case receives widespread attention online. Social media can help distribute missing-person information and encourage people to provide tips, but it can also create rumors and assumptions that investigators must separate from verified evidence.
In Alexis’s case, multiple agencies and members of the community contributed to the search.
A Community That Refused to Forget
Alexis’s disappearance affected more than her immediate family.
Volunteers participated in searches, distributed information, and helped keep public attention focused on the case. Memorials and vigils later gave friends and community members an opportunity to remember her life.
The discovery of her remains brought a painful form of closure, but it could never undo the loss.
Years later, Alexis’s story continues to be remembered by people who followed the search.
Remembering Alexis Gabe
The most important part of this case is not the mystery surrounding the investigation, but the person at its center.
Alexis Gabe was a young woman whose life was cut short. Her disappearance left her family facing months of uncertainty before her remains were finally identified.
The investigation demonstrated how difficult missing-person cases can become when evidence is scattered across different locations and the principal suspect is no longer alive to face questioning or trial.
It also showed the importance of careful investigative work, forensic identification, community involvement, and responsible reporting.
For Alexis’s family, the discovery in Amador County brought an answer they had spent months searching for.
It was an answer they never wanted—but one that finally allowed them to bring Alexis home and begin remembering her for the life she lived, rather than only for the circumstances surrounding her disappearance.
