Caleb learned to play football in our backyard the summer he turned six.
His father, who left when Caleb was four and who exists in this story only as an absence, had taught him nothing. The football came from a garage sale, three dollars, slightly deflated, and Caleb had found it and carried it home and placed it on the kitchen table as if it were a significant discovery.
