Hidden Words on a Grave

At first glance, there was nothing rebellious about the headstone. It stood where headstones are supposed to stand, surrounded by grass, flowers, names, dates, and the quiet architecture of grief. The inscription appeared respectful. Tender, even. Then someone noticed the first letters. Read vertically, they formed a word that did not belong—at least according to the cemetery trustees—anywhere near a memorial. A profanity. To strangers, it could look like a tasteless prank carved permanently into sacred ground. To the dead man’s  family, it was unmistakably him.
