You don’t have to be afraid of your phone to respect what it’s capable of. Inside that slim rectangle is a powerful lithium‑ion battery, designed to hold a remarkable amount of energy. When everything works properly and the device can shed heat into open air, charging is uneventful. But wrap it in bedding, pair it with a frayed cable, or ignore unusual heat, and you’ve quietly removed several layers of safety—especially dangerous while you’re asleep and least able to react.
The fix is almost embarrassingly simple. Move the phone from the bed to a hard, clear surface: a nightstand, desk, or dresser. Keep pillows, blankets, and clothes away from the device and charger. Retire any cable that’s cracked, burned, or shedding insulation instead of “patching” it with tape. And if your phone ever swells, smokes, hisses, or becomes alarmingly hot, back away and call for help. One small change in your bedtime routine can be the difference between an undisturbed night and an emergency you never saw coming.
