4,838 ABSCONDERS: Thousands of asylum seekers vanish before claims are processed across Britain…

More than 3,158 people remained completely unaccounted for as of January following the recorded disappearances from the system. The figures include asylum seekers who escaped from ports or immigration detention facilities alongside individuals on immigration bail who stopped complying with reporting requirements. Individuals are officially logged as absconders only after repeated attempts to contact them have been entirely exhausted by authorities.

Nearly five thousand asylum seekers vanished before their claims were processed across a six-year period according to freedom of information figures obtained by The Sun. A total of 4,838 people were recorded as absconders from January 2020 through December 2025. Only around a third of those individuals were subsequently located by officials operating within the system. Are monitoring procedures failing to track thousands of individuals?
