Among the most fascinating—and potentially dangerous—natural phenomena is something commonly known as square waves. Unlike ordinary waves that travel in a single direction, square waves create an unusual checkerboard-like pattern across the water’s surface, making the ocean appear divided into neat squares.

While the pattern may seem beautiful enough for a photograph, experts generally recommend keeping a safe distance whenever these conditions are observed.

What Exactly Are Square Waves?

Square waves, sometimes called cross seas, occur when two separate wave systems travel across one another at different angles.

Normally, waves move together in roughly the same direction after being generated by a single weather system. However, when two different wind systems or storm-generated swells meet, each produces its own wave pattern.

As these wave trains intersect, they create a crisscross design that resembles a giant grid stretching across the ocean.

From cliffs, beaches, or aerial viewpoints, the effect can look almost perfectly geometric—so unusual that many people assume the images have been digitally edited.

In reality, the phenomenon is entirely natural.

How Do Cross Seas Form?

Several environmental conditions can combine to create square waves.

One common cause is the meeting of swells produced by separate weather systems. For example, a storm hundreds of miles away may generate waves traveling toward the coast, while local winds create another set moving in a different direction.

Tidal currents can also influence wave behavior, especially in narrow channels or coastal regions where moving water interacts with incoming swells.

When these different forces intersect, the ocean surface develops its distinctive crossed appearance.

The result is an impressive display of physics unfolding across the water.

Why Are Square Waves Considered Dangerous?

Although they may look calm from shore, square waves can create unpredictable water movement.

Instead of pushing boats and swimmers in one consistent direction, the intersecting wave systems generate forces from multiple angles simultaneously.

This can make navigation significantly more challenging.

Swimmers may find themselves pulled in unexpected directions as water moves beneath them.

The confusing movement increases the likelihood of losing balance or becoming disoriented.

For these reasons, maritime safety organizations often advise avoiding areas where pronounced cross seas are present.

Challenges for Boaters

Boat operators depend on predictable wave motion to maintain stability.

When waves approach from two different directions, steering becomes more complicated.

Instead of rising and falling smoothly, vessels may rock side-to-side while simultaneously pitching forward and backward.

This unusual movement increases stress on both the crew and the vessel.

Smaller recreational boats are particularly vulnerable because they respond more dramatically to changing wave conditions.

Experienced captains often choose to alter course or delay travel until the sea becomes more uniform.
